What is FERPA?

The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) is a federal law that protects the privacy of student education records and gives parents certain rights regarding their children's education records. These rights transfer to the student when he or she reaches the age of 18 or attends a school beyond the high school level.

Why is FERPA Important?

FERPA is crucial because it ensures the confidentiality and security of sensitive student information. By complying with FERPA, educational institutions can safeguard students' privacy and avoid potential legal and reputational risks.

Who needs to comply with FERPA?

Any institution that receives funds under a federal program, including most schools, colleges, and universities, must comply with FERPA. This includes public and private institutions.
