What is the EU AI Act?

The primary objective of the EU AI Act is to promote the development of human-centric and trustworthy AI while safeguarding people's health, safety, and fundamental rights. The Act follows a risk-based approach, classifying AI systems into various categories.

Why it matters

The EU AI Act has a global reach similar to GDPR. It introduces strict obligations for high-risk AI systems, including robust risk management, data governance, technical documentation, and human oversight. It directly impacts any organization that develops, imports, distributes, or uses AI systems within the European Union, regardless of its location.

• Extraterritorial Scope: The Act applies to any provider or user of an AI system whose output is used in the EU, even if the company is located outside the EU.

• Strict Obligations for High-Risk AI: Providers of high-risk AI systems must implement a robust risk management system, ensure high-quality data governance, maintain technical documentation, and provide for human oversight.

• Conformity Assessments: High-risk AI systems must undergo a conformity assessment before being placed on the market.

• General-Purpose AI Models (GPAI): The Act introduces requirements for large, general-purpose AI models, such as those used for generative AI, to ensure transparency and accountability.
